Do People 80 Plus Have to Pay Council Tax?

Question My mother is over 80 and I would like to know if she still has to pay council tax?

Arthur Weller Replies:

In principle, people who are 80 plus do have to pay council tax. However there may be other reasons why they should pay less council tax than the full amount e.g. someone living on their own can claim a 25% reduction, someone on a low income can claim council tax benefit, and a property left empty by someone now living in hospital or in residential care is eligible for exemption.
